About the Company
ARPANSA is Australia’s authority on radiation protection and nuclear safety. What they do is straightforward: protect people and the environment from harmful radiation.
The Digital Technology team plays a key role in that mission, making sure systems, data, and infrastructure are secure, modern and fit for purpose.
The Role
You’ll step into a hands-on Cyber Networking Engineer role, working across hybrid environments to modernise infrastructure and strengthen security.
What this really means is you’ll be shaping how on-prem and Azure environments connect, perform, and stay protected, while helping drive a broader enterprise uplift.
You won’t be boxed into one narrow lane either. This role cuts across networking, cloud, and cybersecurity.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Design and implement hybrid networking between Azure and on-prem environments
- Configure and manage routing, VPNs, ExpressRoute, and segmentation controls
- Strengthen network security across firewalls, proxies, and web application layers
- Deliver secure remote access solutions (SASE, VPN)
- Perform vulnerability scanning, risk prioritisation, and remediation
- Support identity, access, and Microsoft 365 security controls
- Monitor network and security events, respond to incidents, and drive root cause fixes
- Contribute to high availability, disaster recovery, and business continuity
- Work with stakeholders to align technical solutions to business needs
- Document architecture, designs, and operational processes
What You Bring
- Strong hands-on experience in enterprise networking (on-prem and Azure)
- Deep understanding of routing protocols like BGP, OSPF, and static routing
- Experience with firewalls and perimeter security (Fortinet, Palo Alto, Cisco ASA, Azure)
- Solid Microsoft 365 and Entra ID knowledge (Conditional Access, SSO, Defender tools)
- Experience with vulnerability management tools (Tenable, Qualys)
- Ability to troubleshoot complex issues and make clear, practical decisions
- Strong communication skills — you can work across technical and business teams
Nice to Have
- Experience with automation (PowerShell, Terraform, Ansible)
- Exposure to VMware, Hyper-V, or broader infrastructure platforms
- Familiarity with monitoring tools like Azure Monitor or SolarWinds
- Experience in regulated environments or frameworks like ITIL, ISM, PSPF
- Relevant certifications in networking or cybersecurity
Benefits
- Meaningful work tied to national safety and public impact
- Hybrid working model with flexibility built in
- Exposure to a large-scale enterprise modernisation program
- Broad technical scope across cloud, networking, and security
- A role where you actually influence outcomes, not just maintain systems
Diversity & Inclusion
Different perspectives make better systems and better decisions.
If you’ve got the core experience but don’t tick every box, it’s still worth applying.
Veterans
If you bring Defence or government experience, this environment will feel familiar. Your background is highly relevant, and the transition into this role is well supported.
